Arm

One of the treatment groups in a trial; each arm gets a specific approach so the groups can be compared.

An “arm” is simply one of the treatment groups in a trial. If a study is comparing a new drug against the usual care, it might have two arms: one arm gets the new drug, the other gets the usual care. Some trials have just one arm; others have several.

Each arm follows a specific plan, so researchers can compare the groups side by side and see which approach works best. Which arm you’re placed in is often decided by randomization — assignment by chance. One arm is frequently the control group, which receives the current standard treatment as a point of comparison.
